Vet Tech Externships

Now Accepting Applications for Spring/Summer of 2012.

If you are a final-year vet tech student, in need of your practical/hands-on experience prior to graduation, WRC offers a unique opportunity to gain experience with wildlife while completing all your school requirements.

If you're from out of state, or will only be in Minnesota for a limited time, consider applying to join us as a Visiting Intern.

Vet Tech Externs work in the Treatment Room and Animal Wards, side-by-side with our vets and CVTs.

As a Vet Tech Extern you'll:

a) work 35 hrs/wk

b) assist with animal admits

c) gain customer service skills

d) provide daily food and water to the birds, clean cages and do laundry

e) work with patients in all areas including the ICU, adult wards and nurseries

f) learn how to take radiographs; perform CBCs on birds, mammals and reptiles; examine fecals and crop swabs; administer oral and injectable medicines; and tubefeed various species

g) perform venipuncture on birds, mammals and reptiles

h) have the opportunity to work with more than 160 different species of wild animals

Since you will be working with all species, including fox, coyotes and raccoons, you must have the pre-exposure rabies vaccination prior to beginning your internship. If you're not already vaccinated, please start the process now. It will take a min. of 10 weeks from your first shot until your titer is drawn. We need a titer report on file when you begin your externship. Boynton Clinic at the UMN stocks the vaccine and it may be covered under your student health plan. Otherwise, contact your primary physician.

We accept only 3 interns in each session. You have a choice of: Spring and Late Summer.

Spring runs from mid-April to mid-July

Late Summer runs from July to mid-October

To apply for a Vet Tech Externship:

1) email your resume to CVT Katie Heino

2) forward a recommendation from a prof. or former employer to Katie or fax to her at 651-486-9420

3) indicate for which session you are applying and your rabies status
