My hummers stayed until the end of September. I worry about them making that trip over the Gulf, especially the little one.

Mindy, I'm sure it either died of it's illness/injury or was too badly injured to be rehabilitated and had to be humanely euthanized.

Great question, Mindy: One was euthanized on arrival due to severe fractures. The other bird, shown in the post and donated to the UMN died (it was having seizures). You're correct: we do not euthanize birds, or any animal, to be a specimen. It's only if it dies from some other reason.

I'm confused....did the birds come in alive and one was killed to be a specimen?? Or was the bird dead in the first place? I hope the latter.

Anita, we'd love to have you join us as a volunteer, but you'd be committing to a full volunteer position with us, and not working with the herons. We have a very thorough training period that all of our volunteers go through before they start working with species that could pose a risk (whether it be rabies vector species or birds like pelicans, swans and herons).

We do, however, need lots of help in our Avian Nursery where we have literally hundreds of songbirds who have been recently orphaned. That commitment is seasonal, so you'd only be with us once a week until mid-September (not nearly as long as the 9-month commitment to Animal Care Crew).

There's information on our nurseries and our Animal Care Crew positions in the Get Involved section of our Web site. If, after reading through the descriptions, you're interested in joining us, you can complete an online application right there.

Thanks so much for caring about our local wildlife!

Yes, Karen. Foxes, which are canids like dogs, grow and develop very similarly to a puppy! The best way to determine their approximate age is by looking at the eruption of teeth, as well as noting when their eyes and ears open.
